The holiday season brings joy, love, and precious moments, especially when it's your baby's first Christmas. This special time is not just about gifts and decorations; it’s also about creating memories that last a lifetime. Capturing these moments through a photoshoot is a wonderful way to celebrate this magical time.
Planning a Christmas Photoshoot at home with your baby or toddler? Here are some tips and tricks to get started!
The importance of holiday memories
Every Christmas is unique, but a baby’s first Christmas is truly unforgettable. It’s a time filled with wonder and excitement. By taking the time to document these precious moments, you ensure that these memories can be cherished for years to come. Photos become family heirlooms, reminding us of sweet times spent together.
Choosing the perfect location
The right location can make or break your photoshoot. Think about areas in your home that are cozy and festive. Here are a few ideas:
- Living Room: Centered around the Christmas tree, the living room is often adorned with decorations, making it a prime spot.
- Nursery: A cute and familiar environment for your baby can yield adorable results.
- Near Windows: Natural light can add a warm glow; consider spots where light pours in.
Successful photos come from creative spaces. Consider how these examples might inspire your own setting. For our photoshoot, I chose the living room and used our Christmas tree as the main focus for our photos.

Camera settings + Editing tips
Getting the settings right is key whether you’re using a DSLR or a smartphone. Here are some suggestions:
- For DSLRs, use a wide aperture (f/2.8-f/4) for soft backgrounds.
- Keep the ISO low for clear images, around 100-400 in good light.
- Phones have great automatic settings, but try experimenting with professional modes if available.
Basic editing
Once you've captured your photos, use user-friendly apps:
- Canva, VSCO, Tezza, and Aurora are my favorite editing apps. They are great for adjusting brightness, contrast, and basic editing. Each app has its own filters for you to apply.
- Aim to tweak saturation to make colors pop while keeping everything natural.
Advanced editing (Optional)
If you want to take it further, consider options like:
- Removing blemishes or distractions using tools like Photoshop.
- I do all my photo editing in Lightroom on my desktop. Since I enjoy shooting in RAW format, I appreciate the ability to color grade my photos to my liking with this application. There's also a mobile version of Lightroom that you can use to edit on your phone!
