This year, we’re keeping things simple. I don’t decorate for Halloween, and I’m not the type of mom who goes all out for spooky stories or candy traditions. But I still wanted to create a little space for my son to explore his creativity—something that feels thoughtful, calm, and just for him.
We sat together at the dining table with a Halloween-inspired coloring set I picked up, and he dove right in. He chose colors, focused on the page, and simply enjoyed a creative moment.
I captured it with my Nikon, documenting the quiet joy of him coloring, the little furrows of concentration on his brow, and the way he delighted in his choices. These are the small, fleeting moments that feel most special to me: intentional, simple, and completely ours.
Even though we’ll be on a cruise for Halloween this year—and he’ll get to wear his costume for ship events—this little coloring session was our creative moment at home. It reminded me that meaningful experiences don’t have to be elaborate or tied to tradition. Sometimes, the smallest acts of creativity at the dining table can feel like magic.
