a simple, cozy christmas: how i used what i already had (no ralph lauren needed)

December always brings with it a certain stillness — a slower rhythm that pulls you inward. This year, I wanted our home to reflect that same quiet peace. Nothing extravagant, just layers of warmth and light that make the space feel alive without feeling busy.

Most of what you’ll see around our home this year is familiar — the same décor I’ve loved and collected over the years. There’s something comforting about unpacking the same ornaments, garlands, and candles that have quietly witnessed so many Christmases before.

And if you read my recent post — [let’s be real: you don’t need a “Ralph Lauren” Christmas to make it magical] — you already know I almost went down that rabbit hole of thinking I needed all new things. But once I started decorating, I realized: I already had everything I needed to make our home feel like Christmas.

the heart of our home

Our main family tree stands dressed in the ornaments I’ve had for years (since 2019)— neutral tones, soft whites, and gentle shimmer. It feels peaceful, familiar, and full of memories. I didn’t end up adding the pops of red I thought I would, and honestly, I’m glad. It’s simple, calm, and exactly what our home needed.

a touch of red — in the sweetest space

The one space that received a little extra attention this year was my son’s room.
His tree — his very own little Christmas corner — is where all the red found its home. Tiny red ornaments, a cozy gingerbread garland hanging above his bed, and a red-and-white star from IKEA glowing softly at night. It’s festive, cheerful, and perfectly suited to him.

small details that make it feel special

A few new pieces made their way in — small things that make the season feel cozy without adding clutter:

  • Two red bow plates that feel perfect for weekend breakfasts or cookies after dinner.

  • A set of bow + candy cane–themed glassware that adds a little sparkle to movie nights.

  • Disposable holiday cups for our hot cocoa nights — simple, practical, and fun.

  • A few ribbons (red, white, and gingerbread-themed) that I might use on the dining table or wrapped around napkins when we host.

None of it was about creating a “new look.” It was about leaning into what we already had and adding a few touches that feel joyful and intentional.

a simpler season

Our home feels calm this December — familiar, warm, and full of small traditions that make this time of year what it is.
It’s not about chasing an image or a trend. It’s about being present in the spaces we already love, surrounded by the people who make it home.

“This December, I’m choosing calm over clutter, warmth over perfection — and finding that even the smallest touches can fill a home with joy.”
